Make Mother’s Day Matter

Did you know that a special day to honor mothers and mothering is a part of every major tradition, culture, and nation? That’s because we know instinctively the wonder, miracle, and gift of mothers!

So, how do we tell mom she’s incredible? Whether you’re aiming for “thoughtful” “insightful” or “funny” Mother’s Day gives us the opportunity to say “thank you” and “I love you” … it’s a chance to show how much you care.

Are you stumped when it comes to how to show appreciation? We’re here to support you.

Americans are expected to spend more than $23.6 billion celebrating Mother’s Day this year. The average American is expected to spend $186, according to the National Retail Federation. It’s doesn’t need to cost much to love on Mom. I wanted to share some possibilities. The saying ‘every day is Mother’s Day’ is true but this is one day where intentional thought is gratefully embraced. Here are four ways to love on Mom.

  1. Do something.
It’s my belief that most moms would love to be relieved of her duties. Moms are busy and nothing says, “I love you,” like walking into the house and finding it cleaned. Moms love it when they don’t have to nag, when a son or daughter does chores without being asked, it’s a gift. This Mother’s Day, relieve mom of her usual chores and do them for her. Plan the meal. Do the laundry. Clean the bathroom. Help her catch up on something for work. Galatians 5:13 says, “Through love serve one another.” Honor your mom by serving her this Mother’s Day.
  2. Say or write something.
Mom loves when you use your words. Words matter with Moms, written, spoke, posted words of affirmation. I have every single Mother’s Day card or gift my daughters have given me and they are cherished. My young adult daughters still write poems and notes and share pictures that are heartfelt, these are priceless moments. When a mom says she’d like something homemade she’s not kidding. A homemade breakfast and a heartfelt card could really make her day. Add in a walk or a hike, a game of bowling or time together that is special to her with those reassuring words and mom will feel honored. Often a ‘spa day’ becomes the gift of choice. How about a day complete with a nap and quality time wither special people. Hearing how her family feels about me is the best present. God teaches to, “honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12).
  3. Remember something.
Has she had her eye on something; a cute dress or a book? What are her favorite snacks or drive-thru treat? A thoughtful gift reminds your mom of how well you know her and that you’re thinking of her. What does your mom love? Be creative. Frame a photo from an outing or create a mouse pad or computer wallpaper with the smiling faces of those who love her. Love gives. Philippians 2:4 reminds, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others.” Honor your mom by remembering what she loves on Mother’s Day.
