Identity

It seems like 2019 has started with a theme: Identity. From church sermons to songs we are playing, our identity and where we get our identity keeps coming up.
Sometimes our identity gets confused with what we do. I’m a teacher, a cook, a business owner, an administrative assistant, a doctor, a radio personality – insert your job here – but that’s not really who we are. How do I know this? Because if your job suddenly goes away, you are still here. When our identities get tangled with what we do, or how we feel, or what a friend or a foe says about us, what we think is our identity can come crashing down in a second. Those things are very temporary.
We are playing two songs that speak directly to this: “You Say” by Lauren Daigle and “Who You Say I Am” by Hillsong. Both artists talk about our true identities in Christ. Who better to determine your identity than the one who created you and truly knows everything about you. And who does He say you are?

I am chosen
Not forsaken
I am who You say I am
You are for me
Not against me
I am who You say I am
I’m a child of God
Yes I am

In 2019, my hope for us, is that we find our true identities in the eternal, in who He says we are.
