Dreaming Small

Singer, songwriter Josh Wilson sings about dreaming small:

Dream small, don’t bother like you’ve gotta do it all,

Just let Jesus use you where you are.

One day at a time, live well, loving God and others as yourself.

Find little ways where only you can help, with His great love,

A tiny rock can make a giant fall, dream small.

Josh Wilson was singing this at an end of school teacher appreciation breakfast at Trickum Middle School in Lillburn, Georgia. Three teachers standing by got all teary eyed, these were the words they were looking for.

This is only one of many cool God moments leading up Josh singing his song.

The Chik-fil-a manager that delivered breakfast was an actor in Josh’s I Refuse music video, yet he had never met Josh until this morning. Josh recognized him right away: “hey, you were that character in my music video!”

Before Josh got to singing, and playing his looping pedal he needed an amp. Searching for this equipment landed him in the schools music room, where he almost got detention by a teacher: “Why are you taking that amplifier out of my classroom?” Said teacher later on received a happy surprise when he won a brand new set of speakers just for sitting in a lucky, randomly marked seat for the give away.

These may seem like little things but God is in all of it. God wants us to fully live each day, dreaming small, resting in the promise of his love and provision. It doesn’t always have to be the big thing. Living by example is the best way to encourage others. Affirm the small dreams through shared stories, celebrate your friends, family, and yourself, too. Whether you’re on the receiving end of a ‘drive through difference,’ or an extended hug from your child, receive it well, let it linger.

Proverbs 3 starts off with this great reminder:

Proverbs 3, v. 1-4 (MSG version):

Good friend, don’t forget all I’ve taught you; take to heart my commands.

They’ll help you live a long, long time, a long life lived full and well.

Don’t lose your grip on Love and Loyalty. Tie them around your neck; carve their initials on your heart. Earn a reputation for living well in God’s eyes and the eyes of the people.

The rest of this verse is equally encouraging, maybe take a few minutes to reflect on it while diving into a summer of dreaming small.
